Broadway Twist: Cheyenne Jackson Going ‘Into The Woods’ As Temporary Fill-In For Gavin Creel

Cheyenne Jackson will step into the roles of Cinderella’s Prince and Red Riding Hood’s Wolf for a weeklong stint in Broadway’s hit revival Into the Woods, taking over for Gavin Creel during a previously scheduled absence.

Jackson will play the roles from July 24-August 2 while Creel fulfills prior commitments. The latter will return to the production on August 6 following a residence at The O’Neill National Musical Theatre Conference performing the project he wrote, Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice.

“I’m honored and elated

to have been asked to return to my Broadway roots

and join this enchanted production of Into the Woods alongside these beautiful artists,” Jackson said.

“As a father of two young children, this piece resonates even deeper for me now, and I cannot wait to return to the St James Theatre and go Into the Woods once more.”

The casting was announced today by Jordan Roth, President of Jujamcyn Theaters.

Jackson stars on Fox’s Call Me Kat opposite Mayim Bialik and Leslie Jordan and is perhaps best known to TV audiences for his roles on Glee and American Horror Story. Other credits include HBO’s Watchmen and Apple TV’s The Morning Show, and he next will be seen opposite Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and Kevin Hart in the film Borderlands from Lionsgate.

After making his Broadway debut as an understudy in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jackson made his starring debut in 2005’s Elvis Presley musical All Shook Up. He returned to Broadway in Xanadu (2007), Finian’s Rainbow (2009) and The Performers (2012).

The James Lapine-Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods is directed by Lear deBessonet, with music direction by Rob Berman with The Encores! Orchestra, and choreography by Lorin Latarro. The cast includes Sara Bareilles, Brian d’Arcy James, Patina Miller, Phillipa Soo, Joshua Henry, Aymee Garcia, Ta’Nika Gibson, Annie Golden, Albert Guerzon, Brooke Ishibashi, Kennedy Kanagawa, David Patrick Kelly, Julia Lester, Nancy Opel, Cole Thompson, David Turner and Alysia Velez.

“Bringing Mr. Saturday Night to the Broadway stage and experiencing the laughter and tears this show generates has truly been one of the high points of my career,” said Billy Crystal.

“It has been a joyous experience

to make my musical comedy debut

at the age of 74,

and I thank everyone involved

The character Buddy Young Jr. has been part of my life for many decades and I’m honored that I was able to share him with the audiences at the Nederlander Theatre.”

Following the Broadway run of MR. SATURDAY NIGHT, Billy Crystal will begin pre-production on the AppleTV+ series, “Before.” He will star in and executive produce the series with Academy Award-winning writer Eric Roth and Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson.

MR. SATURDAY NIGHT is the story of Buddy Young Jr., an outrageous and outspoken comedian who found fame, if not fortune, in the early days of television. Now, some 40 years after his TV career flamed out, Buddy seeks one more shot at the spotlight, and while he’s at it, one last shot at fixing the family he fractured along the way.

The musical, which opened on Wednesday April 27th at the Nederlander Theater, will have played 28 previews and 116 performances when it concludes its run.

MR. SATURDAY NIGHT also features Tony Award winner Randy Graff (City of Angels, Les Misérables) as Elaine Young; David Paymer (City Slickers, Quiz Show, State & Main), who is recreating his Oscar-nominated performance as Buddy’s brother Stan Yankleman; Tony Award nominee Shoshana Bean (Wicked, Waitress) as Susan Young; and Chasten Harmon (The Good Fight, Elementary, Broadway’s Hair) as agent Annie Wells.

The Broadway company also includes Jordan Gelber (Sunday in the Park with George), Brian Gonzales (Aladdin), Mylinda Hull (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Sweet Charity), Stephen DeRosa (Gary: A Sequel), Henry Gainza (On Your Feet), Tari Kelly (Groundhog Day) and Tatiana Wechsler (Broadway debut).

In this production, Mr. Crystal returns to the role of Buddy Young Jr. that he portrayed in the original 1992 Columbia Pictures film of the same name, which also marked his directorial debut.

The book for the stage musical is written by Billy Crystal, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.

The score for MR. SATURDAY NIGHT features music by three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Bridges of Madison County) and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Amanda Green (Hands on a Hardbody). Tony Award winner John Rando (Urinetown, On The Town) directs. The production features choreography by Ellenore Scott (Funny Girl).

Based on the Castle Rock Entertainment motion picture, Mr. Saturday Night is written by Billy Crystal, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel and based on a concept by Billy Crystal. By special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.

The Food World is Big.  NYC Vegetarian Food Fest opens the door for you.

In over a decade of eating my way through food fests, I’m always shocked by how many more bites there are to discover.  New cuisines.  New cultures.  This year’s NYC Vegetarian Food Fest promises to deliver on big flavor.

Hint:  There’s a lot of food out there.  And you probably haven’t tried it all.  So, come over and discover some new tastes.   Your mouth and your belly are going to thank you.

I’m already a pretty serious Vegetarian.  Is this more beginner stuff?

I bet you’re joking, but I’ll answer anyway.  Nah.  At this year’s NYC Vegetarian Food Fest, chefs, doctors, foodie authorities are premiering new books, new recipes, new kitchen tools.  It’s gonna be amazing.

Will it be a Fun Show?

One of NY’s premier event producers, Nira Paliwoda, co-founded and produces the fest.  So, yeah. It’s gonna be amazing.  A few years ago, there was a party in the admission line itself.   Paliwoda knows how to host a good time and keep her friends entertained.

“From African influence to HBCU stepping, Brown’s choreography is a forensic amalgamation of styles that shows all forms of Black dance should be considered tribal in origin,” described Matthew Allen of The Grio.

“Brown’s staging is so attuned to the words and cadences of Shange’s choreopoem, yet so confident in its own interpretive vision, that the characters blossom into their full vibrancy,” praised Laura Collins-Hughes of The New York Times.

“We are so proud to have brought Ntozake Shange’s brilliant choreopoem back to Broadway after 46 years from its original premiere and to have had the opportunity to share Camille’s vision and masterful work with a sensational ensemble of women on stage at the Booth Theatre each night,” said producers Nelle Nugent, Ron Simons and Kenneth Teaton. “As Broadway continues to rebound, we knew it would be challenging and our goal remains to present these voices and introduce a new generation of audiences to the power of theatre and the power of Shange’s words.”

Join the circle as seven women share their stories and find strength in each other’s humor and passion through a fusion of music, dance, poetry and song that explodes off the stage and resonates with all. It’s time for joy. It’s time for sisterhood. It’s time for colored girls.

The cast stars Amara Granderson as Lady in Orange, Tendayi Kuumba as Lady in Brown, Kenita R. Miller as Lady in Red, Okwui Okpokwasili as Lady in Green, Stacey Sargeant as Lady in Blue, Alexandria Wailes as Lady in Purple, and D. Woods as Lady in Yellow. Rachel Christopher, Treshelle Edmond, McKenzie Frye, Kala Ross and Alexis Sims join the company as standbys and understudies.

for colored girls… features set design by Myung Hee Cho, costume design by Sarafina Bush, lighting design by Jiyoun Chang, sound design by Justin Ellington, projection design by Aaron Rhyne, and hair & wig design by Cookie Jordan. The show features original music by Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby. Deah Love Harriott serves as the Music Director and Tia Allen is the Music Coordinator. The Production Stage Manager is Bernita Robinson and the Assistant Stage Manager is lark hackshaw. The production features casting by Erica Jensen/Calleri Jensen Davis and production supervision by Hudson Theatricals. Christina Franklin serves as the Associate Director and Maleek Washington and Mayte Natalio serve as Associate Choreographers.

Black girl magic is reborn. Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf is the “landmark of American theater” (The New York Times) that blazed a trail for generations to come. Now, this celebration of the power of Black womanhood returns to Broadway for the first time, reinvented, directed, and choreographed by “a true superstar of theater and dance” (NPR), Tony AwardÒ nominee Camille A. Brown. And her vision is as fearlessly new as it is fiercely now.

About Billie Eilish

Since the release of her debut single “ocean eyes” in 2015, Eilish continues to shatter the ceiling of music with her genre-defying sound. Fast forward from her humble breakout, her album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S as well as 17 additional countries around the world upon release in 2019, and was the most streamed album of that year.

WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? was written, produced and recorded entirely by Billie Eilish and brother FINNEAS in their childhood home of Los Angeles.

Billie Eilish went on to make history as the youngest artist to receive nominations and win in all the major categories at the 62nd GRAMMY® Awards, receiving an award for Best New Artist, Album of the YearRecord of the YearSong of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal AlbumBillie Eilish is also the youngest artist to write and record an official James Bond theme song, ‘No Time To Die.’

Most recently, Billie Eilish was nominated for four additional awards at the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2021, and took home both Record of the Year for ‘everything i wanted,’ and Best Song Written For Visual Media for ‘No Time To Die.’ Billie Eilish’s forthcoming album ‘Happier Than Ever’ was written by Billie and her brother FINNEAS, who also produced the album.

NY’s Time Square is getting a Massive Update

A visitor’s center with a viewing deck is coming to Times Square

Times Square is about to undergo a massive update.

Real estate investment and management firm just announced the $500 million redevelopment of the 118-year-old building One Times Square, which is actually the home of the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball drop celebration.

The revamped building will officially turn into a modern-day visitor center with a new viewing deck and a museum—and it will be open to the public for the very first time in decades.

According to a press release, the new viewing deck will allow visitors to take a close look at the famous New Year’s Eve Ball all the while reveling in elevated views of the neighborhood. The museum, on the other hand, will explore the history of the building and Times Square as a whole, obviously also delving into the importance of the annual midnight celebration.

There’s more: the 26-story building on 42nd Street will also become a destination for branded experiences that will take over 12 floors and, according to the press release, “include digital, virtual and augmented reality integrations.”

The redeveloped building interior is projected to open to the public in the summer of 2024.

“Times Square has served as the crossroads of the world for more than a century, and One Times Square is at the center of that global stage,”

said Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown, in an official statement.

“The building’s next chapter will build on that legacy, creating a new destination in the heart of Times Square for the next generation. With a focus on providing experiences enhanced by technology, the project is representative of the future of real estate and the integration of the physical and virtual worlds. We are reimagining how spaces can be experienced by leveraging the power of AR technology and creative storytelling.”

Lest you think the major update will change the way Times Square looks like for the duration of the 27-month-long construction period, think again: the north facing LED signs on the facade of the building will continue broadcasting advertisements throughout the time and the famous Ball will also stay in place.
