Screen star, Tony Nominee Gabriel Byrne Heads To Broadway With Solo Show ‘Walking With Ghosts’

Screen star and Tony Nominee Gabriel Byrne heads to Broadway with solo show ‘Walking With Ghosts’

Byrne, a two-time Tony nominee, was on Broadway in a 2016 production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, starring as James Tyrone. He also appeared in A Touch of the Poet in 2005 and A Moon for the Misbegotten in 2000.

The synopsis for Walking with Ghosts reads:

“By turns a sensory recollection of a childhood spent in a now almost vanished Ireland, a subversive commentary on stardom,

and – ultimately – a lyrical homage to the people and landscapes that shape our destinies, Walking with Ghosts reflects a remarkable life’s journey in all its hilarious and heartbreaking facets.”

Byrne’s career includes as an actor, writer and director on both stage and screen, and he has starred in over 80 films.

He earned a Golden Globe win for his work in the television drama In Treatment.

Following its debut at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, Walking with Ghosts was then staged for the Edinburgh International Festival.

The production will next have a limited run in London’s West End from September 7-16. Walking with Ghosts was commissioned and first produced by Landmark Productions.

Directed by three-time Emmy award-winning director Price, the creative team also includes Sinéad McKenna (set and lighting designer); Joan O’Clery (costume designer) and Sinéad Diskin (composer & sound designer). Wagner Johnson Productions serve as Executive Producers.

Actor Gabriel Byrne will bring his solo show Walking with Ghosts to Broadway this Fall, with a limited engagement of the production, directed by Lonny Price, beginning performances on Oct. 18 at the Music Box Theatre.

The show officially opens on Thursday, Oct. 27 and runs for 75 performances only.

The production, adapted from Byrne’s memoir of the same name, was announced today by producers Anne Clarke, Mara Isaacs, and Neal Street.

“What an honor to be on Broadway again,

especially in a glorious venue like the Music Box,”

Byrne said.

“It was a real joy to hear laughter in a theatre during the premiere run of Walking with Ghosts in Dublin. I’ve chosen to be honest and unflinching in the recounting of a life from working class Dublin to Hollywood. Although rooted in the local, I hope the play has a universal resonance.”

Oryx Desert Salt supports !Xaus Lodge community

Oryx Desert Salt supports !Xaus Lodge community

Transfrontier Park Destinations (TFPD) has a long-held vision of partnering with communities to commercialise their tourism assets, create sustainable job opportunities and encourage sustainable economic activity.  It is with the invaluable support of homegrown, global companies that it’s been possible to build on this vision.

One of TFPD’s projects is !Xaus Lodge, (pronounced Kaus, with a traditional click) a now thriving 4-star graded and Fair Trade Tourism certified community-based tourism initiative, offering a unique Kalahari desert environment experience for visitors.   It has recently championed the !Ae!Hai Kalahari Heritage Park, the ancestral home of the ǂKhomani San and Mier communities, being declared an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

!Xaus means ‘heart’ in the Nama language and the lodge is built on a dune overlooking a large heart-shaped salt pan. Born out of the !Ae !Hai Kalahari Heritage Park land claim settlement of 2002,  it is owned by the local ǂKhomani San and Mier communities.

Glynn O’Leary, co-founder and CEO of TFPD, says:  ‘ the ǂKhomani San and Mier communities are some of the most  marginalised communities in South Africa so we are always delighted to channel funding from local businesses towards upliftment in these communities.”

He goes on to say, “I am excited that the historic multi-million rand global Rooibos industry has recently made its first annual pay out to the National Khoi and San Council and the South African San Council in a world-first, landmark agreement.” The Rooibos industry has pledged its commitment to environmental stewardship and protection of biodiversity, which is in alignment with TFPD’s own values of responsible environmentalism and tourism.

Similarly, Oryx Desert Salt  supports !Xaus Lodge on an ongoing basis.  O’Leary says, “We’re proud to be associated with Oryx Desert Salt as they sustainably harvest their sun-dried salt from 300 million-year-old underground rivers in a pristine area in the Kalahari Desert as well as package their product in a sustainable way.

It was their generous sponsorship that enabled our head chef, Lientjie Isaks, to travel to the UK for a once-in-a-lifetime UK- chef exchange experience.”  Lientjie was able to bring back her freshly acquired skills to !Xaus Lodge, improving recipes and menus.

Adam Driver, Filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s ‘White Noise’ Open 60th New York Film Festival

Adam Driver, Filmmaker Noah Baumbach “White Noise” will open the 60th New York Film Festival.

After its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Film, Noah Baumbach’s feature take of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel White Noise opens the 60th New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 30.

In the Netflix movie, Adam Driver plays Jack Gladney, a professor and father-of-four whose comfortable suburban college town life and marriage to the private Babette (Greta Gerwig) are upended after a horrifying accident creates a toxic event.

DeLillo’s novel is known for being a pop-philosophical nightmare on unbounded consumerism, ecological catastrophe, and the American obsession with death.

“In 1985 my father and I drove from Brooklyn to see Kurosawa’s Ran open the 23rd NYFF, the same year that he brought home the hardback of Don DeLillo’s White Noise,” said Baumbach.

“Opening the 60th NYFF with White Noise is truly special for me.

This festival was part of my film education and has been a home for me and many of my movies over the years.

I couldn’t be more excited and honored to return.”

“Opening the 60th edition of the New York Film Festival with Noah Baumbach’s ambitious, funny, and resonant White Noise underscores this Festival’s history of introducing new filmmakers to New York audiences.

A regular attendee of the Festival as a kid, Noah Baumbach saw his indie filmmaking career take off after debuting Kicking and Screaming at NYFF in 1995,” said Eugene Hernandez, Executive Director of the New York Film Festival.

“White Noise will usher in a 60th NYFF selection of films by established directors and vibrant new voices;

we’re looking forward to sharing the communal experience of cinema with audiences at Lincoln Center and in other parts of the city this fall! Stay tuned!”

Baumbach’s previous NYFF Main Slate selections include Kicking and Screaming (NYFF33), The Squid and the Whale (NYFF43), Margot at the Wedding (NYFF45), Frances Ha (NYFF50), The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (NYFF55), and Marriage Story (NYFF57 Centerpiece). Baumbach’s While We’re Young was a secret screening at NYFF52.

Baumbach co-directed the documentary De Palma with Jake Paltrow, which was a special event at NYFF53.

The NYFF Main Slate selection committee, chaired by Lim, also includes Hernandez, Florence Almozini, K. Austin Collins, and Rachel Rosen.

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival will run from Sept. 30-Oct. 16.

NYC Parks Preserve Iconic Washington Square Arch

NYC Parks Preserve Iconic Washington Square Arch

NYC Parks conservators and seasonal apprentices are spending three weeks preserving the arch.

Washington Square Arch Preservation Work includes:

– surveying the arch to ensure structural stability of all marble masonry, decorative ornament and sculptural stonework,

– gently cleaning the entire monument of biological growth and pollutants,

– conducting masonry repairs and mortar replacement at the parapet,

– stabilizing the sculptures through chemical stone consolidation,

– applying a graffiti barrier to the lower portion of the arch,

– working with BirdMaster to install an improved roof level bird proofing system.

Dating to 1895, the majestic arch designed by architect Stanford White, is an international symbol of New York City and central gathering place for tourists and New Yorkers alike. The arch was restored in 2003, and this preservation work is part of Parks’ ongoing stewardship.

The Washington Square Arch is one of many monuments throughout the five boroughs that will receive care this summer through NYC Parks’ Citywide Monuments Conservation Program (CMCP), now in its 25th year.

CMCP is an award-winning public/private partnership launched in 1997 and supported by individual, corporate, and foundation grants. Program staff and seasonal conservation apprentices have successfully worked to preserve the city’s rich cultural heritage, and provide graduate-level apprentices with professional training through hands-on work on the nation’s leading collection of public art. Now, some 40 years after his TV career flamed out, Buddy seeks one more shot at the spotlight, and while he’s at it, one last shot at fixing the family he fractured along the way.

The musical, which opened on Wednesday April 27th at the Nederlander Theater, will have played 28 previews and 116 performances when it concludes its run.

MR. SATURDAY NIGHT also features Tony Award winner Randy Graff (City of Angels, Les Misérables) as Elaine Young; David Paymer (City Slickers, Quiz Show, State & Main), who is recreating his Oscar-nominated performance as Buddy’s brother Stan Yankleman; Tony Award nominee Shoshana Bean (Wicked, Waitress) as Susan Young; and Chasten Harmon (The Good Fight, Elementary, Broadway’s Hair) as agent Annie Wells.

SATURDAY NIGHT features music by three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Bridges of Madison County) and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Amanda Green (Hands on a Hardbody). Tony Award winner John Rando (Urinetown, On The Town) directs. The production features choreography by Ellenore Scott (Funny Girl).
