“From African influence to HBCU stepping, Brown’s choreography is a forensic amalgamation of styles that shows all forms of Black dance should be considered tribal in origin,” described Matthew Allen of The Grio.

“Brown’s staging is so attuned to the words and cadences of Shange’s choreopoem, yet so confident in its own interpretive vision, that the characters blossom into their full vibrancy,” praised Laura Collins-Hughes of The New York Times.

“We are so proud to have brought Ntozake Shange’s brilliant choreopoem back to Broadway after 46 years from its original premiere and to have had the opportunity to share Camille’s vision and masterful work with a sensational ensemble of women on stage at the Booth Theatre each night,” said producers Nelle Nugent, Ron Simons and Kenneth Teaton. “As Broadway continues to rebound, we knew it would be challenging and our goal remains to present these voices and introduce a new generation of audiences to the power of theatre and the power of Shange’s words.”

Join the circle as seven women share their stories and find strength in each other’s humor and passion through a fusion of music, dance, poetry and song that explodes off the stage and resonates with all. It’s time for joy. It’s time for sisterhood. It’s time for colored girls.

The cast stars Amara Granderson as Lady in Orange, Tendayi Kuumba as Lady in Brown, Kenita R. Miller as Lady in Red, Okwui Okpokwasili as Lady in Green, Stacey Sargeant as Lady in Blue, Alexandria Wailes as Lady in Purple, and D. Woods as Lady in Yellow. Rachel Christopher, Treshelle Edmond, McKenzie Frye, Kala Ross and Alexis Sims join the company as standbys and understudies.

for colored girls… features set design by Myung Hee Cho, costume design by Sarafina Bush, lighting design by Jiyoun Chang, sound design by Justin Ellington, projection design by Aaron Rhyne, and hair & wig design by Cookie Jordan. The show features original music by Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby. Deah Love Harriott serves as the Music Director and Tia Allen is the Music Coordinator. The Production Stage Manager is Bernita Robinson and the Assistant Stage Manager is lark hackshaw. The production features casting by Erica Jensen/Calleri Jensen Davis and production supervision by Hudson Theatricals. Christina Franklin serves as the Associate Director and Maleek Washington and Mayte Natalio serve as Associate Choreographers.

Black girl magic is reborn. Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf is the “landmark of American theater” (The New York Times) that blazed a trail for generations to come. Now, this celebration of the power of Black womanhood returns to Broadway for the first time, reinvented, directed, and choreographed by “a true superstar of theater and dance” (NPR), Tony AwardÒ nominee Camille A. Brown. And her vision is as fearlessly new as it is fiercely now.

Taste History and Enjoy Finger Lakes Most Delicious Wineries

Most Delicious Finger Laker Wineries

If you enjoy wine – especially white wine – a visit to the Finger Lakes should be your next trip.

The region, which includes 11 lakes in New York, makes a great escape from New York City and other Mid-Atlantic and New England areas for a weekend or more – the Finger Lakes is also a great cross-country flight.

The Finger Lakes is also an especially popular destination for romantic getaways and girls trips like bachelorette parties.

The best Finger Lakes for wineries

Look for wineries on Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga lakes.

The heart of Finger Lakes wine country, these lakes each have a designated wine trail – though new growth and wine tasting rooms are popping up elsewhere in the region too.

Boundary Breaks

Grapes will grow almost anywhere. But to make the finest wines, you need to choose the grape varieties that are suited to the climate of the region and to your vineyard location.

In the cool climate of the Finger Lakes, the best place to grow grapes is close to the lake. And the deeper the lake, the better.

Seneca Lake is the deepest of the eleven Finger Lakes in Central New York. Even though winter temperatures can fall below zero, Seneca Lake rarely freezes over.

Cool-climate varieties include Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Franc.

At Boundary Breaks, they grow each of these varieties and produce wines that express the full range styles that are possible from such classic grapes.

Dr. Frank’s vision, knowledge and determination are credited with elevating the New York wine industry from a state of happy mediocrity to a level that today commands world attention.

Their philosophy is to maintain the legacy built by our founder by continuously producing the highest quality wines from our vinifera vines.

Varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and most recently, Gruner Veltliner are prized and beloved at our winery.

Our pioneering spirit pushes us to build upon our traditional foundation constantly innovating our methods.

Element Winery at F.L.X. Provisions

Made by Christopher Bates—Winemaker, Master Sommelier & Executive Chef

Element Winery is a small production winery founded in 2009 with a mission to create high quality wines that are distinctively Finger Lakes.

With over 25 years of experience in the wine and hospitality industry, Master Sommelier and restauranteur, Christopher Bates is pushing the limits of expectations and expanding the definition of what is possible in the Finger Lakes.

Working with grapes from different soils, sites, and growers, Element aims to create world-class wines that are wholly representative of the extreme climate and terroir.

In addition to producing white wines, Element is focused on producing red wines that have the potential to redefine the Finger Lakes region.

Fox Run Vineyards

Long before the hundreds of travelers, wine-tasters, and oenophiles graced the tables and tasting bars of Fox Run, it was cows that explored the property.

Fox Run was a dairy farm for more than a century.

It wasn’t until 1984 that the first grapes were planted. Fox Run founders, Larry and Adele Wildrick, transformed the Civil War-era dairy barn into a winemaking facility in 1990.

In 1994, Scott Osborn and his first business partner, Andy Hale, purchased the winery from the Wildricks. Now with 50 acres of east-facing vineyards on glacial soils, the winery produces a remarkable range of limited-production, estate wines.

Since those early days, Scott has been working closely with winemaker Peter Bell.

Peter brings a science-based, rationalist approach to winemaking. His team aims to achieve full creative expression within each variety of grape, giving Fox Run an abundance of delicious and refreshing wines.

This wouldn’t be possible without the prowess of Vineyard Manager, John Kaiser, who has worked the land at Fox Run since the first grapes were planted in 1984.

Grace Chorale of Brooklyn in collaboration with Vertical Player Repertory presents “The Constitution”

Grace Chorale of Brooklyn in collaboration with Vertical Player Repertory presents “The Constitution”

Grace Chorale of Brooklyn (Jason Asbury, Music Director), in collaboration with Vertical Player Repertory (Judith Barnes, Artistic Director), presents the in-person premiere of The Constitution, a Secular Oratorio by Benjamin Yarmolinsky on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 7pm and Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 3pm at St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church, 157 Montague Street, Brooklyn Heights, NYC.

Tickets are $15 for students and seniors, $25 general admission, with the option for a special $45 ticket donation to celebrate Grace Chorale of Brooklyn’s 45th Anniversary, and can be purchased at eventbrite.com/e/the-constitution-a-secular-oratorio-tickets-319185090197.
Aside from the Declaration of Independence, no text epitomizes American ideals as much as the Constitution. Acknowledging the Constitution’s embodiment of 18th century values and language, the composer Ben Yarmolinsky has chosen a corresponding 18th century musical style, the Handelian oratorio, as the model for his setting of The Constitution.

The work comprises choruses, arias, and recitatives, similar to The Messiah, but with a recognizably American sound that combines jazz rhythms, blues, folk, gospel, as well as Handelian flourishes to give voice to the Constitution’s words in a clear, vigorous, and highly singable style. People might leave the performances humming an amendment or two!

About Benjamin Yarmolinsky

Benjamin Yarmolinsky has lived and worked in New York since 1982. He has composed hundreds of works, including operas, chamber music, choral music, musical theater works, orchestral music, film scores, and songs. He is also a classical guitarist and singer and has performed extensively in those capacities.
His most recent works include The Constitution: a secular oratorio; Pentagrams, a chamber work for flute, guitar and piano; The Trial of Anna, an opera based on the 2015 trial of Dr. Anna Stubblefield; The Yarmolinsky Variations, a 50-minute video; and Americana, a program of American folk song arrangements for solo guitar.
Before graduating from Harvard University in 1977, Yarmolinsky spent two years in Paris, studying with the legendary Nadia Boulanger.
From 1978 through 1982, he lived in Morocco where he taught music at the American School of Tangier, immersed himself in the local music, and was friendly with composer Paul Bowles. On returning to New York, he studied at the City University of New York where he earned his Ph.D. in music composition.
In 1989, he was one of the founders of Friends & Enemies of New Music. He currently holds a position of Professor of Music at the City University of New York’s Bronx Community College campus.

NYC Parks Kicks Of 2022 Outdoor Pool Season at Hamilton Fish Pool

NYC Parks Kicks Of 2022 Outdoor Pool Season at Hamilton Fish Pool

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue today joined Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, Senator Brian Kavanagh, Council Member Carlina Rivera, and local kids and community members to celebrate the start of the outdoor pool season at Hamilton Fish Pool on the Lower East Side. After remarks, Commissioner Donoghue jumped in with kids to celebrate the first splash of the summer. The season kickoff celebration featured music, refreshments, games, and giveaways.

“Summer is here which means our pools and beaches are open to enjoy,”

said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of the city’s public pools to stay cool, get some exercise, and have fun.”

“It’s time to make a splash: New York City’s outdoor pools are open for the season!” said Commissioner Donoghue.

“Our pools are popular summer destinations for so many New Yorkers, and we’re happy to provide these free places to have fun, cool off on hot days, and get some exercise.”

NYC Parks’ outdoor pools will open beginning Tuesday, June 28 through Sunday, September 11.

Daily hours are 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Operations will be adjusted as needed based on daily lifeguard coverage to keep swimmers safe.

NYC Parks has once again installed sunscreen dispensers to provide free SPF 30 sun protection at outdoor pools and beaches. Parks will also again partner with the Department of Education to offer free lunches at sites across the city. Meals are available to any New Yorker 18 and under, and no identification or registration is required.

HAMILTON FISH POOL

“Now that New York City’s public pools are open, it’s officially summer in NYC!” said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.

“Our public pools have served as cornerstones of inclusion and equity in our city for decades and, under the leadership of Commissioner Donoghue and the NYC Parks team, New Yorkers in every corner of this city again have a place to go to have fun, cool off, and stay healthy during the hot summer months. Jump in!”

“The summer is a special time for families, especially when our pools get up and running. I’m thrilled that my constituents will continue to use the great Hamilton Fish pool and all of the pools in my district,” said Assembly Member Harvey Epstein.

NYC Parks operates 53 outdoor pools throughout the five boroughs. Two pools will be closed this season due to active reconstruction projects: Tony Dapolito Pool and Harlem Meer Center (formerly Lasker Pool) in Central Park. Visit Parks’ Outdoor Pools page for more information, and check out the Cool It! NYC map for cooling features in every neighborhood – including pools, spray showers, drinking fountains, and more.

In 2018, Parks launched the Cool Pools NYC initiative, which has upgraded 16 pools across the five boroughs with bright new paint palettes, summer-themed wall art, lounge chairs, and more. Cool Pools has made pools more fun, relaxing, and welcoming, giving New Yorkers the chance to experience an old neighborhood amenity in a new way.

Face coverings are not required to enter pool facilities, but their use will be encouraged inside bathrooms and locker rooms.

About Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company:
“Chen’s phrases, part exoskeletal rigidity, part boneless grace, embodied an epic dignity.” – Village Voice
Choreographer/Dancer, Nai-Ni Chen, was a unique artist whose work crosses cultural boundaries. Each of her dances reflect her personal vision as an immigrant and an American female artist with deep roots in the Asian culture. From this very personal perspective, she created new works that reflect current issues with global influences. Some of her works were developed in collaboration with renowned artists such as the Ahn Trio, Glen Velez, Joan La Barbara, and the members of the New Asia Chamber Music Society.
Bridging the grace of Asian elegance and American dynamism, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company is a premier provider of innovative cultural experiences that reflect the inspiring hope and energy of the immigrant’s journey. The company’s ground-breaking works have focused on themes from ancient legends that reflect issues of the present time to purely abstract, contemporary dances influenced by a mix of cultures Nai-Ni Chen experienced in New York. An Asian American company that celebrates cross-cultural experience, the Company’s productions naturally bring forth issues of identity, authenticity, and equality.
The Company has presented at some of the most prestigious concert halls such as the Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center in New York, and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Florida. NY’s Time Square is getting a Massive Update

A visitor’s center with a viewing deck is coming to Times Square

Times Square is about to undergo a massive update.

Real estate investment and management firm just announced the $500 million redevelopment of the 118-year-old building One Times Square, which is actually the home of the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball drop celebration.

The revamped building will officially turn into a modern-day visitor center with a new viewing deck and a museum—and it will be open to the public for the very first time in decades.

According to a press release, the new viewing deck will allow visitors to take a close look at the famous New Year’s Eve Ball all the while reveling in elevated views of the neighborhood. The museum, on the other hand, will explore the history of the building and Times Square as a whole, obviously also delving into the importance of the annual midnight celebration.

There’s more: the 26-story building on 42nd Street will also become a destination for branded experiences that will take over 12 floors and, according to the press release, “include digital, virtual and augmented reality integrations.”

The redeveloped building interior is projected to open to the public in the summer of 2024.

“Times Square has served as the crossroads of the world for more than a century, and One Times Square is at the center of that global stage,”

said Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown, in an official statement.

“The building’s next chapter will build on that legacy, creating a new destination in the heart of Times Square for the next generation. With a focus on providing experiences enhanced by technology, the project is representative of the future of real estate and the integration of the physical and virtual worlds. We are reimagining how spaces can be experienced by leveraging the power of AR technology and creative storytelling.”

Lest you think the major update will change the way Times Square looks like for the duration of the 27-month-long construction period, think again: the north facing LED signs on the facade of the building will continue broadcasting advertisements throughout the time and the famous Ball will also stay in place.

Additionally, the collection features six never-released performances from the pathbreaking web and television series Live From Daryl’s House, which Hall launched in 2007 with the then-novel idea of “playing with my friends and putting it up on the internet.”

One of those performances includes the recently shared recording of the Eurythmics classic “Here Comes The Rain Again,” performed with that song’s co-writer Dave Stewart. Other guests on the Live From Daryl’s House tracks include Rundgren, Monte Montgomery and more.  Taken as a whole, BeforeAfter draws unexpected and satisfying connections between the esoteric and accessible sides of Daryl Hall’s creativity.
