DOC NYC 2023: Cherry Jones and Bill T. Jones live in-person for ‘Obsessed with Light’ North America Premiere
North American Premiere of OBSESSED WITH LIGHT at DOC NYC followed by a Q&A with filmmakers and a live dance performance by Jody Sperling, choreographer and artistic director of Time Lapse Dance. She is featured in the film.
Synopsis
Obsessed with Light is a meditation on light and the enduring obsession to create. The film pulls back the curtain on Loïe Fuller, a wildly original performer who revolutionized the visual culture of the early 20th century. Creating a dialogue between the past and the present, the documentary features Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble and delves into the astonishing influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary culture including artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Bill T. Jones, Shakira and William Kentridge. In the process, the film uncovers commonalities that connect these creative luminaries to Fuller and each other.
The American creator of modern dance, Fuller (1862-1928) created a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric and movement. She also pioneered the ingenious use of electricity for the stage, even building a glass floor so that she could be lit from below. Fuller propelled herself into swirling abstractions that made audiences gasp and she immediately understood the importance of protecting her ownership of these innovations. Always struggling against a flood of imitators, Fuller was the first choreographer to attempt to copyright her dances and sued in court as early as 1892. Given the recent Supreme Court decision in the dispute between the Andy Warhol Foundation and photographer Lynn Goldsmith, Fuller’s early battles against copyright infringement are incredibly relevant.
Anyone who has been to a rock concert has seen a modern version of the lighting designs that Fuller patented over a century ago.
Fuller shot to international stardom after performing at the Folies Bergère in Paris. Her rise to fame was intertwined with the very beginning of cinema and her Serpentine dance became an iconic subject for the earliest filmmakers like Georges Méliès and Alice Guy Blaché. It was also among the earliest footage ever to be hand colored. All of the hand coloring or tinting in the archival clips in Obsessed with Light is original.
Obsessed with Light is a film about transformation. It is about a Midwestern vaudeville performer who performed with Buffalo Bill before becoming a world-famous star of Belle Époque Paris and the embodiment of the Art Nouveau movement with her elaborate productions of ephemeral, shape-shifting abstractions. It’s about a woman, described by contemporaries as “odd and badly dressed,” who transformed herself into the “Fairy of Light” onstage. It’s about a woman who became famous on her own terms– unapologetic about her body type and open about her sexuality. And it’s about a visionary artist who disrupted the prevailing notions of dance and the imagined limits of the human body. Lastly, the film is about a lost modernist whose story is crucial to understanding both early cinema and performance.

Prosecco has gone from a little known mountain fizz to a vinous superhero, overtaking Champagne (and every other sparkling wine out there) and enjoyed by wine drinkers throughout the world, as the base of a cocktail or an everyday quaff.
But despite its huge popularity, most people don’t know much about it.
And there is much more to Prosecco than many people are aware.
”My objective is to
clarify the critical differences
between the original ancient Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco and
the DOC Prosecco that was enacted in 2010.”
Alan Tardi
New York Wine Studio
Prosecco is produced only in Italy, in the Northern regions of Veneto and Friuli, and there are three official Prosecco appellations.
Prosecco DOC
One of them, Prosecco DOC, was created in 2010. It occupies a huge, mostly flat area encompassing almost two entire regions and accounts for most of the 700+ million bottles of Prosecco produced each year.
Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG
Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG is a tiny area in the foothills of the Dolomites consisting of 15 small municipalities in the province of Treviso. This is the ancient winegrowing area where Prosecco was born and made a miraculous comeback in the aftermath of World War II.

New York Wine Studio’s Alan Tardi
Besides its pedigree, there are numerous factors of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene enclave that distinguish it from any other winegrowing area in the world: complex and diverse topography, variety of soils, native grape varieties, distinct sub-areas, ancient history, and varied typology—bubbly, fizzy, and still; secondary fermentation in tank or in bottle, leaving sediment in the bottle (known as Ancestral Method) or removing it (Traditional Method).
In this class—which takes place right in the middle of National Prosecco DOC week—we will discuss the origin and evolution of Prosecco in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area. We will also examine the two additional Prosecco appellations created in 2010.
But most of the time will be devoted to exploring and tasting Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco through a lineup of 8 exceptional terroir-driven wines, in a variety of styles, that demonstrate the unique characteristics, complexity, and diversity of the original Prosecco.
Participants will also learn how to say “CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE” like an Italian!
Alan Tardi has arranged a fantastic lineup of unusual and exceptional wines (half of them are coming directly from Italy) which demonstrate the various factors that characterize the complexity and uniqueness of Conegliano Valdobbiadene: Different production methods (“Tranquillo” i.e. still, Martinotti, Classico/Traditional, Ancestral); frizzante, spumante; single vineyards, Rive, native grape varieties; diverse, soils, terroirs and topographies.

NYC’s The High Line to Re-Open July 16 After Pandemic Closure
Visitors Can Secure Timed Entry Reservations Starting July 9
The High Line announced that the High Line will reopen to the public with limited capacity on July 16, 2020, after temporarily closing in March to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
The High Line, working with NYC Parks, also issued visitation protocols to ensure that visitors can maintain social distancing in full accordance with City guidelines.
‘‘We are happy to be able to reopen the High Line and we invite our neighbors and fellow New Yorkers across the City to reconnect with the High Line and each other in a new way,’’
said Robert Hammond, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the High Line.
‘‘Throughout the pandemic, we have really seen how important parks and public spaces are to our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. As New York City and our immediate neighborhoods continue to reopen and recover, we hope the High Line will bring comfort and happiness to all who are able to visit. Finally, while you are here, please remember to wear your face coverings.’’
Beginning July 16, 2020:
- The High Line will be open seven days a week, from 12:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. each day.
- Visitors enter the High Line at Gansevoort Street. Foot traffic inside the park will flow north, in one direction, to 23rd Street.
- Staircases at 14th, 16th, 20th, and 23rd Streets will be exit-only, as will the elevators at 14th and 23rd Streets, except for people with mobility access needs.
In addition, to ensure visitors are able to stay at least six feet apart while on the High Line, a limited number of people will be permitted to be in the park at one time.
In order to minimize wait times and discourage groups from gathering at the entrance, timed-entry reservations can be made in advance at thehighline.org/welcome.
Reservations can be secured beginning Thursday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m.
A limited number of walk-up passes will be available at the entrance each day. For more information about timed entry visit thehighline.org.
“The High Line team has been hard at work to create a system to welcome you safely, with reduced capacity to make social distancing possible,”
said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP.
“The park’s reopening will be a great moment for New York City, showcasing our resiliency and our commitment to safely welcoming residents, workers, and visitors to parks and open spaces across the five boroughs.”
Bathrooms and water fountains will remain accessible and maintained with enhanced cleaning. Food vendors and the High Line Shop will be closed, and the water feature at the Diller – von Furstenberg Sundeck will not run.
All visitors are encouraged to follow the City’s COVID-19 guidelines. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks about plans to open the High Line north of 23rd Street.
