Wavertree is designated on the National Register of Historic Places and represents the thousands of ships that docked along New York’s waterfront over the centuries. Gaze up at the towering masts and miles of rigging. Learn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, from the captain to the ship’s officers, cooks, and crew. Look out across New York Harbor and see the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights. Or, look landward and see the skyline of the Financial District, which flourished because of ships like Wavertree, which brought in the goods that helped businesses thrive.
Wavertree is permanently moored at Pier 16 and does not sail the harbor. Access to Wavertree requires climbing a small set of ladder-type stairs and an angled gangway.

Heitz Cellar is excited to announce that Estate Director Erik Elliott has passed the Masters Exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas.

Erik is one of 10 individuals who successfully met the qualifications to be awarded the title of Master Sommelier. The results were announced at the Krug Reception on August 31, 2022, at the Royal Sonesta in Portland, Oregon.

The Master Sommelier Diploma is the highest distinction a professional can attain in the beverage service industry.

The Master Sommelier Diploma Examination consists of three sections:

a verbal theory examination,

a wine assessment exercise using the Deductive Tasting Method,

and a practical component that focuses on hospitality, beverage service, salesmanship, and overall business acumen.

Candidates must receive passing scores in each section to earn the highly coveted Master Sommelier title.

Adam Driver, Filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s ‘White Noise’ Open 60th New York Film Festival

Adam Driver, Filmmaker Noah Baumbach “White Noise” will open the 60th New York Film Festival.

After its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Film, Noah Baumbach’s feature take of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel White Noise opens the 60th New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on September 30.

In the Netflix movie, Adam Driver plays Jack Gladney, a professor and father-of-four whose comfortable suburban college town life and marriage to the private Babette (Greta Gerwig) are upended after a horrifying accident creates a toxic event.

DeLillo’s novel is known for being a pop-philosophical nightmare on unbounded consumerism, ecological catastrophe, and the American obsession with death.

“In 1985 my father and I drove from Brooklyn to see Kurosawa’s Ran open the 23rd NYFF, the same year that he brought home the hardback of Don DeLillo’s White Noise,” said Baumbach.

“Opening the 60th NYFF with White Noise is truly special for me.

This festival was part of my film education and has been a home for me and many of my movies over the years.

I couldn’t be more excited and honored to return.”

A regular attendee of the Festival as a kid, Noah Baumbach saw his indie filmmaking career take off after debuting Kicking and Screaming at NYFF in 1995,” said Eugene Hernandez, Executive Director of the New York Film Festival.

“White Noise will usher in a 60th NYFF selection of films by established directors and vibrant new voices;

we’re looking forward to sharing the communal experience of cinema with audiences at Lincoln Center and in other parts of the city this fall! Stay tuned!”

Baumbach’s previous NYFF Main Slate selections include Kicking and Screaming (NYFF33), The Squid and the Whale (NYFF43), Margot at the Wedding (NYFF45), Frances Ha (NYFF50), The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (NYFF55), and Marriage Story (NYFF57 Centerpiece). Baumbach’s While We’re Young was a secret screening at NYFF52.

Baumbach co-directed the documentary De Palma with Jake Paltrow, which was a special event at NYFF53.

The NYFF Main Slate selection committee, chaired by Lim, also includes Hernandez, Florence Almozini, K. Austin Collins, and Rachel Rosen.

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival will run from Sept. 30-Oct. 16.

It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. He set out his manifesto in his very first single “New Song.” The lyrics called on the listener to challenge their preconceived ideas, to see both sides and “throw off your mental chains.” “New Song” was recently used in a pivotal scene in Breaking Bad where Aaron Paul’s character Jessie Pinkman questions if he wants to “play by the rules.” “New Song” peaked at number 3 in the UK singles charts.
Along with “New Song,” the first two albums, Humans Lib and Dream into Action, brought Howard a host of hits including “Things Can Only Get Better,” “What is Love,” “Pearl In The Shell,” “Like to Get To know You Well,” “Hide And Seek” (performed at Live Aid), “Look Mama” and “No One Is To Blame,” which reached No.1 in the US. Howard has sold over 8 million albums across the globe and is one of a select group of British artists who have comprehensively ‘broken America’.
Howard’s Synthesizer driven debut influenced a new generation of electronic and dance musicians. Widely regarded as a pioneer of synths such as the Roland Juno 60, Jupiter 8 and Moog Prodigy he has worked with contemporary electronic artists such as Ferry Corsten, Eric Prydz and most recently Cedric Gervais. In 1905, the first hydroelectric power plant opened on the Canadian site of the Niagara River. Origingally it provided Canadians a way to harness and create electricity, or hydroelectricity. Now, it offers visitors a unique interactive experience.

A national landmark in Canada has opened a 100-year-old tunnel for visitors to explore.

“It led to the industrialization of South Ontario, western New York.

And today, we have adapted it for use, this industrial heritage site,

so the attraction of the generator hall floor,”

Niagara Parks CEO David Adamas said.

Canada’s Niagara Power Company offers visitors a unique interactive experience where they can learn the history and it provides visitors with never-before-seen views of the Falls.

so the guest will take a glass-enclosed elevator down 180-feet,

down to the bottom into the wheel pit and then out the tunnel and into a brand-new viewing platform, which extends 65 feet out into the Niagara River, and they are going to

get spectacular new views of Niagara Falls,”

Niagara Parks Director Kim Viney said.

NYC Parks Celebrate the Opening of New Cafe in Historic McCarren Park House

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue will join the operators of the new McCarren ParkHouse Aaron Broudo and Belvy Klein, and community members to cut the ribbon on a new café in North Brooklyn’s most popular park.

The new eatery is located in the historic McCarren Park House which benefited from more than $3M invested by the operators to expand and upgrade the space to accommodate dining, parks staff operations offices, and new public bathrooms.

McCarren ParkHouse café features four unique vendors operating in unison, offering sandwiches, ice cream, coffee and more, seven days a week.

The planned venue, to be called McCarren Park House (with an address of 855 Lorimer St.), was first announced in January 2020.

It will be operated by the team of Aaron Broudo and Belvy Klein, who were awarded the business by the Parks Department.

They formerly ran Greenpoint’s Brooklyn Night Bazaar venue, and currently operate both the Jacob Riis Park and Rockaway Beach boardwalk concessions.

Appearing in front of Community Board 1’s SLA Review Committee on July 27, where the duo was recommended for a liquor license, additional details surfaced. They will serve coffee in the mornings, from 8 am until 11 am, which is when the restaurant opens. It will close at 11 pm on weekdays and 1 am on weekends, which is when the park itself closes.

The upgraded facility includes more than 100 outdoor seats at picnic tables and 30 seats inside of the building.

Thanks to $3 million in improvements, the building was redesigned to meet the needs of the general public, café patrons, and Parks staff in a seamless space that encourages circulation and access for all.

The Heimerdinger Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing nutrient-rich meals and education, free of charge, for families facing cancer, announces executives

Blake Boyd (Pinnacle Financial Partners), Jenni Bradley (BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee), Tim Falade (HCA Healthcare) and Andrew Sartoris (HCA Healthcare) have joined the organization’s Board of Directors.

The 13-member board, comprised of business leaders across multiple industries, help develop the strategic plans of The Heimerdinger Foundation in support of its signature Meals 4 Health and Healing program.

Blake Boyd came to Nashville 16 years ago by way of Texas where he attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and graduated with a degree in Business Management. Boyd is a Senior Vice President at Pinnacle Financial Partners where he has served in various roles since 2011.  He currently works as a Financial Advisor serving clients ranging from middle market businesses to real estate investors to private banking clients.

Jenni Bradley manages strategic projects for Provider Programs and Strategy at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. She helps drives corporate efforts related to value-based reimbursement initiatives and alternative payment arrangements with network physicians and hospitals.

Bradley previously served as director of Talent Development for the Nashville Health Care Council where she oversaw all activities to offer unique education and networking activities for individuals rising in their careers within Nashville’s $95 billion health care industry.

Prior to joining the Council, Bradley was based in Washington, D.C. where she held positions at the U.S. Department of Education, The White House and the Office of Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. A Nashville native, Bradley received her B.A. in College Scholars from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her Master’s in Political Management from The George Washington University.

He earned his Master of Business Administration from Belmont University’s Jack C. Massey College of Business.

Andrew Sartoris is Assistant Vice President for Strategy & Innovation at HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services with over 180 hospitals and 2,000 ambulatory sites of care. In his role, he serves as an internal strategist to support the development and execution of growth strategies across the HCA enterprise. Sartoris has over 17 years of experience in healthcare consulting, strategy, and operations. Prior to his current role, he worked in Deloitte Consulting’s healthcare practice, where he advised healthcare providers and health plans on strategic and operational challenges. He earned his B.S in Economics from Duke University and M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University.

Meals 4 Health and Healing, the signature program of The Heimerdinger Foundation, is a heart-centered, caring community preparing organic, immune-boosting, for anti-inflammatory meals free of charge for cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment and their caregivers. Since 2013, the nonprofit has served over 100,000 meals to hundreds of clients and their caregivers in Williamson and Davidson Counties.

Research shows that nearly 80% of cancer patients end up malnourished as a result of cancer treatment. Consuming nourishing meals can make a vital difference to cancer patients as they fight their illness and heal from treatment.

With an emphasis on serving those who are in crisis, who have little or no caregiving support, or who are financially unable to provide themselves with nutritious foods, the program elevates the recovery process for many who may be at high risk for malnutrition, which can slow down or stop treatment.

In addition, with over 250 active teen and adult volunteers participating in their program each year, the organization educates those volunteers about eating a “whole food” diet to reduce inflammation and to reduce the likelihood of chronic, inflammatory conditions like cancer. By educating patients, their families, and the adult and teen volunteers who provide the giving hands and hearts behind the organization’s mission, the seven-person team at The Heimerdinger Foundation is transforming the health and nutritional choices of countless people in middle Tennessee.
