Lea Michele’s Broadway Sensation ‘Funny Girl’ Sets Closing Date

Lea Michele’s Broadway Sensation ‘Funny Girl’ Sets Closing Date

Life on Broadway is coming to a close for the company of “Funny Girl.” The Broadway revival extended its run, but the show will play its final performance on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023.

Its closing date is nearly exactly one year after Lea Michele joined the cast.

The revival of “Funny Girl” first opened in April 2022 led by Beanie Feldstein as Fanny Brice. But she and Jane Lynch, who was replaced by Tovah Feldshuh as Fanny’s mother, departed the production in August after the production was plagued with poor reviews and modest turnout.

“Funny Girl” likely would have closed sooner without the casting changes.

But box office results have been on the upswing since last September and seats at the August Wilson Theater have remained well-sold, even setting multiple house records. By the time the cast, including Ramin Karimloo as Nicky Arnstein and Jared Grimes as Eddie Ryan, takes its final bow, the Broadway revival will have played 599 performances and 30 previews.

As previously announced, “Funny Girl” will launch a tour in September, starting Providence, R.I., before continuing to more than 30 North American cities.

“Funny Girl” follows Brice on her improbable rise to fame and her stormy relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein. The musical features theater classics like “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star” and “People.” In a unique arrangement, Julie Benko, who has become a fan favorite at the August Wilson Theater, performs the role of Fanny Brice every Thursday and while Michele is out.

The musical debuted on Broadway in 1964, starring Barbra Streisand, and received several Tony nominations. The revival marks the first time “Funny Girl” has returned to the Great White Way in 58 years.

Michele certainly had tough shoes to fill, but critics have favorably compared her performance to Streisand’s star-making turn.

Kosher Food & Wine Experience (KFWE) returns to Cheslea Piers NYC for 17th Annual visit previewing 100s of new Kosher wines, spirits, top chefs, caterers, restaurants.

The ‘not-to be missed’ event featuring a vast array of premier wines and spirits from around the globe – filling Pier 60 from end to end – will also highlight Royal Wine’s growing portfolio of Passover wines to consumers, industry professionals and oenophiles alike.

“KFWE has been a key influencer in determining which wines will grace America’s Passover Seder tables, showing wines ranging in price from $6 to $500,” says Gabriel Geller, PR Director, Royal Wine Corp.

“The show’s success underscores the fact that the kosher food and beverage industry is exploding at a warp speed and shows no sign of slowing down…”

“…The takeaway from every sold-out event to-date – there’s no culinary or wine-making envelope that can’t be pushed,” adds Geller.

Guests will enjoy six hours of nonstop wine and food tasting

Thousands of bottles of wine representing more than 60 wineries from the world’s best-regarded regions will be poured throughout the evening for all to taste and savor.

Novelties include:  Rimapere Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough

region, part of the Edmond de Rothschild Heritage estates; Razi’el, the new winery of the Ben Zaken family and owners of Israel’s flagship boutique winery Domaine du Castel, will be present with its traditional method rosé sparkling wine and its award-winning blend of Syrah and Carignan.

While Royal Wine has had an impressive selection of prestigious wines from Bordeaux such as Château Giscours and Pontet-Canet, the kosher wine importer, négociant and distributor continues to add outstanding names to its repertoire. Château Bellefont-Belcier, a Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Emilion, is the latest producer to join the kosher wine bandwagon with a kosher cuvée 2020 vintage – an excellent vintage for the region. Château Léoville Poyferré, a Grand Cru Saint Julien which has been making kosher cuvées since 1999 will also be present at KFWE with its 2020 vintage, marking the 200th anniversary of ownership by the Cuvelier family.

There are many great appellations in France beyond Bordeaux, such as the Rhône Valley. One of Rhône’s most respected estates will be represented at the wine show with the introduction of its first two kosher wines: Raymond Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Raymond Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes.

From Tuscany, Villa Mangiacane will present Magnificus, a Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Herzog Wine Cellars, Royal Wine’s own winery located in Oxnard, CA, will showcase its line of award-winning wines, including the value line Baron Herzog as well as its high-end Napa Valley-grown Herzog Generation VIII. David Galzignato, Herzog’s new Senior Director of Winemaking Operations, will be on hand at KFWE 2023 to answer questions about the many wines he oversees.

KFWE Gourmet Food

In addition, a cornucopia of gourmet food representing a variety of cuisines including classical French, Japanese, steakhouse favorites, traditional Jewish cooking, nouveau American, charcuterie, fusion, Caribbean, authentic barbecue, and Mexican, as well as a variety of decadent desserts and specialty coffees will be served

Euphoria’s Maude Apatow Makes Broadway Debut in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Feb 2023

Euphoria’s Maude Apatow will make her Broadway Debut in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ February 2023.

The three-time Best Musical Revival Award-winning production of Little Shop of Horrors, now in its third florid year Off-Broadway, will welcome television and film star Maude Apatow (HBO’s “Euphoria”, Netflix’s “Hollywood”) as Audrey from February 7 – April 2, 2023.

Maude Apatow Makes Broadway Debut

Apatow will make her New York stage debut alongside Tony Award Winner Matt Doyle (Company) as Seymour. Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Ohio State Murders) returns to the company as Dr. Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. beginning January 24, and D’Kaylah Unique Whitley (Dear Evan Hansen, Aida) joins the cast as Ronnette beginning January 17.

“I have long admired the emotional intelligence and vulnerability Maude has displayed on television and in film. She’s a natural fit for Audrey,”

says director Michael Mayer.

“It delighted me to learn that, as a child, Little Shop was her gateway into her lifelong love of performing, and that this show gets to be her professional stage debut. We’re thrilled to have her become a part of the Little Shop legacy.”

“We are overjoyed to welcome another incredible performer to the show. With her beautiful voice and immense talent, we cannot wait to see Maude light up the stage alongside Matt Doyle’s brilliant portrayal of Seymour,” says producer Robert Ahrens, on behalf of his partners. “Audiences are also really in for a treat with D’Kayla’s joyous & spunky Ronnette, and Bryce’s hilarious Dr. Orin Scrivello is not to be missed.”

Maude Apatow’s Broadway Debut Joins Acclaimed Cast

Little Shop of Horrors currently stars Doyle as Seymour, Tony Award Winner Lena Hall(Hedwig, “Snowpiercer”) as Audrey (through Feb 5), Andrew Call (Groundhog Day, Rock of Ages) as Dr. Orin Scrivello D.D.S. (through Jan 22),

Tony Award Winner Brad Oscar(Something Rotten!, The Producers, Jekyll & Hyde) as Mushnik, Aaron Arnell Harrington(RENT 25th Anniversary Tour) as The Voice of Audrey II, Tiffany Renee Thompson as Crystal, Khadija Sankoh as Chiffon, Joy Woods as Ronnette (through Jan 19), Josh Daniel, Camryn Hampton, Michael Iannucci, Weston Chandler Long, Chelsea Turbin, and Teddy Yudain.

With a book and lyrics by Grammy and Academy Award winner Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast), and music by Tony and Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Aladdin, Newsies), the 2020 Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk Award-winning Best Musical Revival of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening).

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS began previews at Westside Theatre on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and opened to widespread critical acclaim on Thursday, October 17, 2019. Ben Brantley of The New York Times deemed the show a “Critic’s Pick,” declaring that “a certain carnivorous plant has been re-potted in Hell’s Kitchen, and I am delighted to report that it’s thriving there.

Michael Mayer’s delicious revival…summons the shivery elation I felt seeing the musical at the East Village’s Orpheum nearly four decades ago. It restores the show to its original scale and sensibility, reminding us of the special potency of grisly things that come in small, impeccably wrapped packages.” The Hollywood Reporter describes the production as “wildly exuberant and irresistible.

This terrific revival will only deepen the devotion for those lucky enough to catch it.” Time Out gives the musical “Four Stars! A deeply satisfying revival… with a marvelous cast. What kind of deal with what kind of devil are you willing to cut to see it?”

Following the theater industry’s extended suspension of operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production re-opened its doors on September 21, 2021, to sold-out audiences hungry for the thrill of live theater again.

Washington Post critic Peter Marks wrote in 2022, “I’m back at Little Shop of Horrors because, friends, I needed to laugh today. Hearing the glorious Menken/Ashman score sung by this cast fills the prescription. [A return trip] is WORTH IT.”

Seymour is a down-on-his-luck florist with a crush on his co-worker Audrey. When he discovers a mysterious – and voracious – plant, suddenly Seymour and Audrey are thrust into an epic battle that will determine the fate of the entire human race. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS first premiered Off-Broadway in 1982, where it made audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good. The musical has since catapulted into a global phenomenon, with productions across the world from Broadway to London’s West End, to Asia and Australia – plus a hit 1986 film adaptation directed by Frank Oz that starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin. Now, the musical has made its highly-anticipated return home to Off-Broadway, in an intimate new production directed by Michael Mayer that offers an unprecedented opportunity to get close — maybe too close — to an incredible plant with an insatiable appetite.

Mayer is joined on the LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS creative team by Choreographer Ellenore Scott (Funny Girl, Mr. Saturday Night), Tony-nominated Scenic Designer Julian Crouch (Hedwig and the Angry Inch); Two-time Tony-winning Lighting Designer Bradley King (Hadestown, Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812); Emmy-winning Costume Designer Tom Broecker (Everyday Rapture); Tony-winning Sound Designer Jessica Paz (Hadestown); Emmy-nominated Puppet Designer Nicholas Mahon (Pyeongchang Olympics Opening Ceremony) and Hair and Makeup Designer Tommy Kurzman (My Fair Lady). Original puppet design is by Martin P. Robinson, Puppets are by Monkey Boys Productions, and Grammy nominee Will Van Dyke (Pretty Woman) serves as Music Supervisor, Orchestrator & Arranger.

This production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is the recipient of multiple theater awards and nominations including: four Outer Critics Circle Honors (Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Director: Michael Mayer, Outstanding Actor in a Musical: Jonathan Groff, and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical: Christian Borle); The Drama League Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, as well as, Distinguished Performance Nominations for Jonathan Groff and Christian Borle; two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Christian Borle, in addition to an Outstanding Actress nomination for Tammy Blanchard and Outstanding Scenic Design nomination for Julian Crouch; the Lortel Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical for Christian Borle, as well as, a Best Revival Nomination, an Outstanding Lead Actor nomination for Jonathan Groff and an Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination for Ari Groover; and a 2021 Grammy Award Nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is produced by Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens, Hunter Arnold, Mickey Liddell, Caiola Productions, Curt Cronin, John Joseph, DDM Productions, DeSantis-Baugh Productions, Elizabeth Dewberry & Ali Ahmet Kocabiyik, Wendy Federman, Roy Furman, Deborah Green, Kayla Greenspan, Marguerite Hoffman, Sally Cade Holmes, Latitude Link, Seriff Productions, Silva Theatrical Group, and Eric Gelb/Oliver Roth. It’s a ‘Charming Taste of Europe’ with Italian Wines for Holiday Dinner at NYC’s Lincoln Center

Italian Wines poured for ‘Charming Taste of Europe’ at NYC’s Lincoln Center Holiday Dinner

Italian wines can be the preferred choice for the holidays or equally suited for every day drinking, whether tasted alone or paired with a meal.

Old World history, diverse varietals and styles to match every dish and palette, and are surprisingly affordable – especially compared to wines of similar prestige.

Lincoln Ristorante hosts Italian Wines from Charming Taste of Europe

Tonight’s dinner takes place at Lincoln Ristorante beside NYC Lincoln Center’s reflecting pool and iconic Henry Moore sculpture.

Hosted by Italian Wine Expert Susannah Gold for Vini D’Abruzzo, Kavala Coop, Sweet Bordeaux and the European Union.

The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Kavala (Kavala COOP) was founded in 1927. Today it has 500 members that include producers from the provinces of Kavala, Nestos and Thassos.

We’re tasting Italian wines with our holiday dinner.

With over 36,000 hectares (138 miles) of vineyard space and producing 3.5 million hectoliteres (350 million liters) each year, viticulture is one of Italy’s strongest agriculture industries.

Nearly 80% of grape growing and wine activity takes place in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

There’s a truly impressive amount of quality wine coming from the area. 200 private wineries and 40 cooperatives in Abruzzo’s Chieti province.

Velenosi Prope Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2021

Wine: Velenosi Prope Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2021

This is a beautiful surprise.  At first when you’re served a rose with your cut of streak, it can seem like a mistake.  Most rose’s couldn’t stand up to the challenge.

But this story is different; and this wine is special.

Notice it’s intense bright pink color.  The most confident welcome with the results to match.  Beautiful notes of floral aroma, roses, red fruit. Rounded mouthfeel with raspberry and high acidity to cut through the steak and linger long after.  Would pair well with sourdough, rib eye, gamey meat.

If you’re looking for a bold rose’ this is a great selection.

This is the powerful wine you’d expect paired with steak.  Deep Ruby color, with black cherry and spices on those nose. Plush, velvet with smokey oak.  Very tannic, almost chewy.  A young wine with lots of room to evolve over the years

Wine: Chateau de Garbes “Cuvee Fut de chene” AOC Cadillac 2019

Shimmering golden color. The nose has fruit with slightly woody aroma. Refreshing honeyed notes of candied fruit.

Wine: Chateau Loupiac-Gaudiel 2017

Pale yellow in the glass.  Apricot and peach on the nose.  Very well-balanced with nuances of saffron, chive and ginger.  The ginger brings a slight bitter ending that makes for a brisk palette cleanser.
