NYC Foodies want to know, what does Plant-based Honey Pair Well With?

LA Foodies want to know, what does Plant-based Honey Pair Well With?

You keep reading about plant-based honey. The environmental story, the nutrition.  But how does it taste?  What can you pair it with?  Let’s find out in an exclusive interview with Mellody Food’s Darko Mandich.

Darko Mandich is a food entrepreneur in San Francisco. After spending almost a decade in the European honey industry as a business executive, Darko committed to reimagining the honey industry to become sustainable. Darko immigrated from Europe to California to launch Mellody, the world’s first plant-based honey brand. Darko is an advocate of saving the bees and wild pollinators.

Recently, I had a chance to talk with Darko.

You said you are a foodie. What are some incredible food pairings that you recommend with this honey?

When I like to talk about food, I always like to join food and beverage.

What does Plant-based Honey Pair Well With?

What does Plant-based Honey Pair Well With?

I’ll start with beverages first. I think this honey is perfect for mocktails and cocktails. It gives just enough of sweetness that someone is looking for in their alcoholic cocktail or non-alcoholic cocktail.

Will Plant-based Honey pair well With baklava

Will Plant-based Honey pair well With baklava

In terms of food, I would split it into savory and sweet. Sweet applications are my favorite, I just have a sweet tooth. My favorite dessert is Baklava because it comes from the part of the world where I come from. My wife, who’s a home chef, [used our honey to make] baklava and it was amazing.

We did an amazing collaboration with an upscale Italian plant-based restaurant in San Francisco Baia. They created this amazing, vegan panna cotta with our honey on top. It was culinary mastery developed by Chef Joshua Yap, who started working with Chef Matthew Kenny, who is also a well-known, plant-based chef.

Will plant-based honey pair well with a burger

Will plant-based honey pair well with a burger

In terms of savory applications, that opens a whole new world of opportunities. How we interact with stuff like pizza and honey, burgers and honey. Obviously honey and vinaigrette and olive oil, used as a dressing for salads, honey mustard, just name it.

What’s next for Mellody? What are the next steps out there for you?

Getting into as many restaurants as possible in this country. People are inquiring about the standalone product [separate from the speciality box] get it very soon at Eleven Madison Home.

Working on getting this product to as many people as possible, and just to invite everybody to participate in this mission of creating the sustainable future of honey.

I’m just excited about every tiny step in this journey until melody becomes the word for honey.

Yeah, follow us on Instagram and TikTok at MellodyFoods

In terms of purchasing, head to ElevenMadisonHome.com and you can purchase it there.

Saving the bees is learning more about them. Learning more about pollinators and you can do that on our social media.

And finally, if you’re equally passionate about bees and plants as we are, ask your favorite restaurant to reach out to us to offer Mellody in your favorite restaurant. It can be a vegan restaurant on non-vegan.

We are gonna work with all the restaurants that reach out to us where people ask to see our product offered, either on the menu, either within a meal, or just if you order a cup of tea and you want a side of Mellody.

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan at their First Ever Bespoke NYC Tasting

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan at their First Ever Bespoke NYC Tasting

On March 27 KLYR Rum hosted their first-ever Manhattan event at New York’s Cad & The Dandy Penthouse showroom to showcase their line of rums to a crowd of NYC’s mixology, nightlife and style scene.

The event was jam-packed.

The stylish crowd gathered to meet the founders, hear their story and of course, taste their canned cocktails.  Just like a well-balanced cocktail, all three parts were mixed impressively.

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan at their First Ever Bespoke NYC Tasting

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan

KLYR Rum Cocktails

Their cocktails are dangerously clean.  They chose to make purity their guide and as a result they created a rum that ‘drinks like a vodka’ — the result is an excellent mixing partner for ice, soda, or a touch of fruit.

KLYR Water

The 99 calorie KLYR Water is made with natural flavors. Pretty classic tasting notes, with a very clean and crisp taste.

It’s a versatile cocktail that can be an easy-drink happy hour go-to or dressed-up for an elegant black-tie evening. Another good sign: 4.5% ABV.

KLYR Krush

Their KLYR Krush is a bit more.  More flavor, more character, more fun.  Its flavor is a gush of exotic sun-ripened oranges.  Sweet, surprising, refreshing.  Again: 4.5% ABV.

The Krush is an easy rooftop treat this spring and summer.  It’s what I would pass around to my friends hanging out on our building’s rooftop after brunch on a Sunday Funday.

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan

KLYR Rum Makes a Splash in Manhattan

KLYR Rum Team

Adam Lehrhaupt, Amish Patel, and Neil Kahrim started out as easy rum drinkers.  Let’s be honest, most of us can relate as rum is easy to drink.  But as they got deeper into appreciating the spirit, they started to tinker.  With flavor, with health benefits, with mixers.  They wanted a result that was purer.

To do that, they realized they had to produce their own.

A fun, but expensive hobby that has now been launched into a profitable endeavor beyond their wildest expectations – and they’re just getting started.

At the beginning, the team’s mission was very straightforward.  They wanted Lexi Close, KLYR’s master distiller, to try as many versions as it took to fine-tune the perfect ratio of sugar, water, and yeast.

And now their next step is getting KLYR Rum into everyone’s hands for a taste.

The only problem with that, based on the crowd at this event, is no one just wanted one taste.  They go back for a second, a third, and so.  Again, it’s easy to drink.

KLYR Rum Story

KLYR Rum set out to disrupt the industry by redefining what rum can be. A revolutionary distillation process that will make the most avid vodka, gin and whiskey lovers say, ‘yes please’.

Holding on to the body of an aged rum, add the smoothness and easy drinking of a vodka. The result is a rum that is refreshingly different from shelf after shelf of countless other rums out there.

At twelve times distilled and filtered eighteen times, KLYR is an innovative, fresh take on rum that speaks to American ingenuity. KLYR Rum has zero grams of sugar, zero grams of carbohydrates, and it’s lower in calories than other, more sugary rums.

VOLCANICA COFFEE’S IRISH ESPRESSO MARTINI RECIPE

1.5 oz of Irish Whiskey

½ oz of coffee liqueur

½ oz of Bailey’s Irish Cream

2 oz of cooled espresso using Volcanica Coffee’s Café Cubano Miami Espresso Blend

  1. In a shaker glass, pour in your ingredients. Fill with ice and shake until shaker is frosty.
  2. Strain into martini glass.

VOLCANICA COFFEE’S IRISH COFFEE RECIPE

1½ to 2 oz (45 to 60ml) Irish whiskey, to taste

4 oz (120ml) fresh-brewed Dark Roast Costa Rica Nespresso Coffee Pods

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 oz (60ml) heavy cream, very cold

Unsweetened cocoa powder, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill the cups with hot water to warm them up.
  2. Whip the cold cream until thick, but not stiff; it should still be able to run off of a spoon. Set aside. Tip: The key to success for whipped cream is to keep it very cold, so put your whisk and a stainless steel bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes before.
  3. Pour the warm water out of the coffee mugs. Fill ¾ full with coffee, add the brown sugar and stir well until dissolved. Add a few drops of coffee into the whipped cream and stir to combine.
  4. Add the whiskey into coffee and stir to combine.
  1. Hold a spoon upside down over the coffee, the tip touching the glass edge and the surface of coffee. Gently pour the cream over the back of the spoon, allowing it to gently pool on top of the coffee; filling to the top of the mug. Do not stir. You should obtain a lovely layering that looks like a pint of Guiness!
  2. Using a stenciled shamrock, sprinkle cocoa powder over the cream to make a beautiful drawing.

Euphoria’s Maude Apatow Makes Broadway Debut in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Feb 2023

Euphoria’s Maude Apatow will make her Broadway Debut in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ February 2023.

The three-time Best Musical Revival Award-winning production of Little Shop of Horrors, now in its third florid year Off-Broadway, will welcome television and film star Maude Apatow (HBO’s “Euphoria”, Netflix’s “Hollywood”) as Audrey from February 7 – April 2, 2023.

Maude Apatow Makes Broadway Debut

Apatow will make her New York stage debut alongside Tony Award Winner Matt Doyle (Company) as Seymour. Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Ohio State Murders) returns to the company as Dr. Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. beginning January 24, and D’Kaylah Unique Whitley (Dear Evan Hansen, Aida) joins the cast as Ronnette beginning January 17.

“I have long admired the emotional intelligence and vulnerability Maude has displayed on television and in film. She’s a natural fit for Audrey,”

says director Michael Mayer.

“It delighted me to learn that, as a child, Little Shop was her gateway into her lifelong love of performing, and that this show gets to be her professional stage debut. We’re thrilled to have her become a part of the Little Shop legacy.”

“We are overjoyed to welcome another incredible performer to the show. With her beautiful voice and immense talent, we cannot wait to see Maude light up the stage alongside Matt Doyle’s brilliant portrayal of Seymour,” says producer Robert Ahrens, on behalf of his partners. “Audiences are also really in for a treat with D’Kayla’s joyous & spunky Ronnette, and Bryce’s hilarious Dr. Orin Scrivello is not to be missed.”

Maude Apatow’s Broadway Debut Joins Acclaimed Cast

Little Shop of Horrors currently stars Doyle as Seymour, Tony Award Winner Lena Hall(Hedwig, “Snowpiercer”) as Audrey (through Feb 5), Andrew Call (Groundhog Day, Rock of Ages) as Dr. Orin Scrivello D.D.S. (through Jan 22),

Tony Award Winner Brad Oscar(Something Rotten!, The Producers, Jekyll & Hyde) as Mushnik, Aaron Arnell Harrington(RENT 25th Anniversary Tour) as The Voice of Audrey II, Tiffany Renee Thompson as Crystal, Khadija Sankoh as Chiffon, Joy Woods as Ronnette (through Jan 19), Josh Daniel, Camryn Hampton, Michael Iannucci, Weston Chandler Long, Chelsea Turbin, and Teddy Yudain.

With a book and lyrics by Grammy and Academy Award winner Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast), and music by Tony and Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Aladdin, Newsies), the 2020 Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk Award-winning Best Musical Revival of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening).

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS began previews at Westside Theatre on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and opened to widespread critical acclaim on Thursday, October 17, 2019. Ben Brantley of The New York Times deemed the show a “Critic’s Pick,” declaring that “a certain carnivorous plant has been re-potted in Hell’s Kitchen, and I am delighted to report that it’s thriving there.

Michael Mayer’s delicious revival…summons the shivery elation I felt seeing the musical at the East Village’s Orpheum nearly four decades ago. It restores the show to its original scale and sensibility, reminding us of the special potency of grisly things that come in small, impeccably wrapped packages.” The Hollywood Reporter describes the production as “wildly exuberant and irresistible.

This terrific revival will only deepen the devotion for those lucky enough to catch it.” Time Out gives the musical “Four Stars! A deeply satisfying revival… with a marvelous cast. What kind of deal with what kind of devil are you willing to cut to see it?”

Following the theater industry’s extended suspension of operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production re-opened its doors on September 21, 2021, to sold-out audiences hungry for the thrill of live theater again.

Washington Post critic Peter Marks wrote in 2022, “I’m back at Little Shop of Horrors because, friends, I needed to laugh today. Hearing the glorious Menken/Ashman score sung by this cast fills the prescription. [A return trip] is WORTH IT.”

Seymour is a down-on-his-luck florist with a crush on his co-worker Audrey. When he discovers a mysterious – and voracious – plant, suddenly Seymour and Audrey are thrust into an epic battle that will determine the fate of the entire human race. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS first premiered Off-Broadway in 1982, where it made audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good. The musical has since catapulted into a global phenomenon, with productions across the world from Broadway to London’s West End, to Asia and Australia – plus a hit 1986 film adaptation directed by Frank Oz that starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin. Now, the musical has made its highly-anticipated return home to Off-Broadway, in an intimate new production directed by Michael Mayer that offers an unprecedented opportunity to get close — maybe too close — to an incredible plant with an insatiable appetite.

Mayer is joined on the LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS creative team by Choreographer Ellenore Scott (Funny Girl, Mr. Saturday Night), Tony-nominated Scenic Designer Julian Crouch (Hedwig and the Angry Inch); Two-time Tony-winning Lighting Designer Bradley King (Hadestown, Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812); Emmy-winning Costume Designer Tom Broecker (Everyday Rapture); Tony-winning Sound Designer Jessica Paz (Hadestown); Emmy-nominated Puppet Designer Nicholas Mahon (Pyeongchang Olympics Opening Ceremony) and Hair and Makeup Designer Tommy Kurzman (My Fair Lady). Original puppet design is by Martin P. Robinson, Puppets are by Monkey Boys Productions, and Grammy nominee Will Van Dyke (Pretty Woman) serves as Music Supervisor, Orchestrator & Arranger.

This production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is the recipient of multiple theater awards and nominations including: four Outer Critics Circle Honors (Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Director: Michael Mayer, Outstanding Actor in a Musical: Jonathan Groff, and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical: Christian Borle); The Drama League Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, as well as, Distinguished Performance Nominations for Jonathan Groff and Christian Borle; two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Christian Borle, in addition to an Outstanding Actress nomination for Tammy Blanchard and Outstanding Scenic Design nomination for Julian Crouch; the Lortel Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical for Christian Borle, as well as, a Best Revival Nomination, an Outstanding Lead Actor nomination for Jonathan Groff and an Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination for Ari Groover; and a 2021 Grammy Award Nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is produced by Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens, Hunter Arnold, Mickey Liddell, Caiola Productions, Curt Cronin, John Joseph, DDM Productions, DeSantis-Baugh Productions, Elizabeth Dewberry & Ali Ahmet Kocabiyik, Wendy Federman, Roy Furman, Deborah Green, Kayla Greenspan, Marguerite Hoffman, Sally Cade Holmes, Latitude Link, Seriff Productions, Silva Theatrical Group, and Eric Gelb/Oliver Roth. New York Restaurants Showcase ‘Eco-Heroes’ of Bordeaux Wine in November with Rare 3-Liter Bottles

Over 60 restaurants will pour big bottle formats that spotlight fourteen inspiring wineries and Bordeaux’s significant environmental commitment

The Bordeaux wine region is joining forces with New York restaurants to celebrate the “Eco-Heroes” of Bordeaux with a special big bottle promotion this November.

New York restaurants will feature fourteen Bordeaux wine

New York restaurants will feature fourteen Bordeaux wineries that exemplify the region’s significant commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. Making this particularly memorable for New York wine lovers, the featured wines will be offered in 3-Liter bottles, a rare, double-magnum size.

Ranging from wine bars to Michelin-starred restaurants, more than 60 accounts in New York have signed up to support the program this fall.

Launching November 1, participating accounts will pour a selection of wines from 3-Liter bottles, and many are opting to host additional tasting experiences and promotions.

“Sustainability in winemaking

is really at the forefront for winegrowers in Bordeaux,”

said Allan Sichel, President of the Bordeaux Wine Council.

“We are thrilled to work together with our wineries, importers and New York hospitality partners to honor the ‘Eco-Heroes’ of Bordeaux this season and hope to inspire all who taste the wines with their collective achievements.”

The Bordeaux region is committed to collective and individual environmental practices that encourage long-term vine health and mitigate the impact of climate change. Recent efforts have reached impressive sustainable benchmarks: 75% of the Bordeaux vineyard is certified by an environmental approach; 23% of the vineyard is organic or in conversion; and collectively, the region has reduced carbon emissions by 24% since 2012. Many winegrowers are also actively developing biodiversity initiatives to encourage healthy bat, bee and tree populations to thrive in synergy with vineyard plantings.

This time of year the road trip is gorgeous.   But as you get closer, your view turns from romantic Autumn to haunted destination.

Pocono Park Halloween

You drive deep into the dark woods, fog creeps around your car, moonlight pierces through the trees, howling wind makes screachy scratching sounds.

Just then, you expect Leatherface to run out sparking up his chainsaw – and the party hasn’t even started yet.

A moment from Haunted Poconos Park’s Playhouse

All of the festivities take place within walking distance at the newly-acquired Poconos Park, a huge indoor / outdoor destination that hosts concerts, theater shows, corporate events, weddings and private gatherings.

This weekend it’s transformed into a Halloween Haven.

Poconos Park manages to create Halloween for everyone, from you littlest goblin who wants candy, laughs, and no scares to the group of friends who want scares and thrills.   Every Halloween and horror lover has a spot here.

For Halloween, event company From The Roots has taken over and promises thrills, smiles and memories for you, your friend and your family.

John M. Oakes who runs From The Roots, loves putting on a show and delights in every twist and turn from ultra scary, to the cutest moments.

Earlier this week, we got a preview tour of the most popular attraction – Playhouse of Horror.

It’s a fast-moving, screams around every corner, standing – crawling – jump fest.  Pro tip: Go through it next to your friend who screams the most — it’ll +10 the whole experience for ya.  The Playhouse is fun, fast-paced, well-designed and has the mark of any good maze, when it’s done you’re high-fiving your friends and wanting to get right back in line to go again.
